What is a
Pleasure Craft Operator Card ?

In order to legally operate a motorized pleasure craft in Canada, you must be able to provide proof of competency. Unless you have completed a boating safety course in Canada prior to April 1, 1999, obtained a specified marine safety certificate issued to professional mariners, or have an applicable Rental Boat Safety Checklist, a Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC) is required as proof of competency.

PCOC's are issued by a Transport Canada accredited course provider such as CanadaBoatSafety.com. Through our
CanadaBoatSafety.com website, CanadaBoatSafety will take you through our online study guide and provide access to the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test. Upon successfully passing the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, RiverCity Safety will issue your personalized PCOC.

In addition to guiding you through the material in pursuit of your PCOC, the program provides you with the knowledge and understanding required to keep yourself, your passengers and fellow boaters safe in both routine and unexpected situations.

How Does It Work ?

Obtaining your PCOC is a two-step process.

Step One: Complete the CanadaBoatSafety.com online course. The course presents the material in a flexible and easy-to-understand manner. The material is organized into five chapters, with a 10 question quiz at the end of each chapter. You must achieve a passing grade of 80% before proceeding to the next chapter.

Step Two: Take the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test. This is a timed (75 minutes) test consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions and a pass mark of 75% (at least 38 of 50 questions must be answered correctly).

Once you 've successfully passed the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, your temporary PCOC can be downloaded and your permanent card will be sent to you via mail.

Your PCOC is good for life.

In the event that you fail the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test, you are allowed to retake the PCOC test after 24 hours. In the event of a second failing grade, you are required to retake the RiverCity Safety online study guide before attempting the Transport Canada Boating Safety Test again. There is no additional cost provided the entire process is completed within a year from registration.
